How do you get from downtown Denver to the museum?

The museum is in the Golden Triangle, and from downtown you can ride RTD’s Free MallRide to Cleveland Place, then walk south through Civic Center Park to the campus. The museum is about 1.9 miles from Budget Inn Denver Downtown; guest rooms at this Denver hotel are in the downtown area.

You can enter the campus through either the Hamilton Building or the Martin Building. The Kirkland’s entrance is at 1201 Bannock Street.

For more on getting around the city, getting around Denver from the downtown area covers local transport.

For drop-off and pick-up, the museum provides elder and handicap access on 13th Avenue between Broadway and Bannock streets. Accessible paid parking is on the west side of The Kirkland, reached from the alley between Bannock and Cherokee streets; two designated handicap spaces sit beside the museum entrance on the parking-lot side.

Which collections and buildings should you plan around?

Which collections and buildings should you plan around?

The museum campus has three distinct buildings, and general admission grants access to all three, including The Kirkland.

Hamilton Building

Designed by Polish-American architect Daniel Libeskind, the 146,000-square-foot Hamilton Building has four floors with collection art, temporary exhibitions, learning spaces and Sharp Auditorium.

Martin Building

Italian architect Gio Ponti designed the 210,000-square-foot Martin Building. Its eight stories hold collection art, temporary exhibitions, learning spaces and the Sie Welcome Center.

The Kirkland

The 38,500-square-foot Kirkland was designed by Jim Olson. Its collection includes international decorative arts, Colorado fine art and a retrospective of Vance Kirkland’s work.

Across the campus, collection galleries cover Arts of Africa, modern and contemporary art, Latin American art, Indigenous Arts of North America, Arts of Asia, Western American art, European art before 1800, Northwest Coast and Alaska Native art, and Arts of the Ancient Americas.

With temporary exhibitions and learning spaces in both the Hamilton and Martin buildings, checking the museum’s current offerings can help you decide how to divide your time.

All public areas are wheelchair accessible. Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are on every level of the Hamilton and Martin buildings, and each has a single-user or family restroom on level one. Manual wheelchairs are available free at the Hamilton and Martin Building welcome centers on a first-come, first-served basis; portable stools are also available.

Average school-sized backpacks measuring 17 × 13 inches and 6 to 8 inches deep are allowed. Oversized bags are not permitted in galleries except for medical needs. Lockers are on level 1 and the lower level of each building.

Non-flash photography is allowed in galleries and public spaces unless a gallery entrance or object label says otherwise. Food and drink, including water, are allowed in atriums and lower levels, but not in galleries.

What can you pair with a museum visit?

Civic Center Park is part of the downtown route to the museum: after taking the Free MallRide to Cleveland Place, walk south through the park to reach the campus. That makes the park a natural outdoor part of the same outing. A one-day Denver itinerary can help you fit the museum into a downtown schedule.
